  35. 1. Introduction
  36.  
  37. The Plus! pack for Windows 95 adds many additional features to Windows - some
  38. things that really should have been included with Windows 95 itself. One of
  39. these is Desktop Themes. A Theme is a collection of sounds, icons, pointers
  40. (cursors), along with wallpaper, colour and font settings and a screensaver.
  41. Basically, it's all the things about the Windows interface you can configure
  42. through the Control Panel, brought together into one package.
  43.  
  44. There are literally hundreds of Themes available, and until now you needed
  45. the Plus! pack to use them. Without it, it was necessary to install all the
  46. components manually, a difficult and time-consuming process. Then, if you
  47. didn't like the finished product, you had to manually change all your
  48. settings back again.
  49.  
  50. The Desktop Themes application is a direct replacement for the Desktop Themes
  51. control panel provided with the Plus! pack. It offers the same functionality
  52. as the Plus! version with a few additional features. Even if you have Plus!
  53. you might want to consider switching to using Desktop Themes for the additional
  54. features.
  55.  
  56. v1.1 of Desktop Themes also allows you to edit the Theme components directly,
  57. to easily create new Themes to distribute to others.

  60. 2. About Themes
  61.  
  62. A Theme is described by a .theme file, which is basically a .INI file
  63. containing all the settings for that particular theme. Desktop Themes can read
  64. this file and make all the necessary configuration changes in one hit.
  65.  
  66. You can find hundreds of themes on the net. Some good places to start looking

  76. 3. Installation
  77.  
  78. No special installation is necessary to run Desktop Themes - simply copy the
  79. .EXE to wherever you want to keep it (eg C:\Program Files). You can then
  80. create a shortcut to it and put this on your Desktop, in your Start menu, etc.
  81.  
  82. The first time you run Desktop Themes, it looks to see if Plus! themes have
  83. already been installed on your system. If they haven't, a dialog appears
  84. prompting you to create a directory to store themes in. This is necessary for
  85. the proper functioning of the program.
  86.  
  87. The theme path defaults to "c:\Program Files\Plus!\Themes", because this is
  88. what Plus! itself uses. If you ever install Plus! in the future, the themes
  89. you currently have installed should work with no input from you. You can,
  90. however, store the themes anywhere you like.
  91.  
  92. Desktop Themes also adds two items to the context menu for Theme files -
  93. Apply Settings, and Install Theme. Once these is installed, you can apply a
  94. theme instantly by right-clicking on it and choosing Apply Settings (or by
  95. double-clicking on its icon). You can install a theme by right-clicking on it
  96. and choosing Install Theme.
  97.  
  98. Themes that you install with Desktop Themes can automatically be uninstalled,
  99. either using Desktop Themes, or with the Add & Remove Programs control panel.
  100.  
  101. For this to work, the Desktop Themes executable must remain in the place it
  102. was when it was first run. That is, you should copy it to its 'final resting
  103. place' before running it for the first time. If you move the Desktop Themes
  104. executable after it has installed itself, you can update the context menus
  105. by clicking the 'Update' button on the Miscellaneous page. However, any themes
  106. you have installed will no longer be uninstallable from Add & Remove Progrems
  107. (uninstalling them through Desktop Themes will still work).
  108.  
  109. If you have previously installed the 'Theme Installer' application by the
  110. same author, you should remove this (by double-clicking on its icon again).
  111. Desktop Themes completely replaces Theme Installer as the installer/uninstaller
  112. for themes.

  116. 4. Usage
  117.  
  118. Start the Desktop Themes program by double-clicking on its icon. A dialog will
  119. appear containing several pages, the first of which allows you to select a
  120. theme from those installed.
  121.  
  122. A drop-down list is used to choose a theme. This list contains the names
  123. of all themes present in the specified directory. It also has two special
  124. entries at the top of the list:
  125.  
  126.     (current settings)
  127.  
  128.     This refers to the current configuration of your desktop. You can
  129.     select this at any time to return to your current configuration.
  130.  
  131.     (original settings)
  132.  
  133.     This refers to the configuration of your desktop when the Desktop
  134.     Themes program was run. You can use this to return to the original
  135.     settings, which allows you to undo any changes you have made with
  136.     the Apply button. Note that the Cancel button does not undo the
  137.     effects of pressing Apply.
  138.  
  139. When Desktop Themes first runs, it also automatically saves your current
  140. settings to a theme called "My Original Settings". This way you will always
  141. be able to return to your old settings after having installed other themes.
  142.  
  143. The "Save As" button allows you to save the current settings to a new theme.
  144. You can use this to preserve your configuration before you start playing with
  145. new ones. You can also use it to create themes to distribute to other people.
  146.  
  147. The "Active Components" list allows you to choose which components in the
  148. currently loaded theme will be installed in your system when you choose Apply
  149. or Ok. By default they are all switched on, meaning that a new theme will
  150. totally overwrite your existing settings. You can selectively disable parts of
  151. the theme through these switches.

  154. 5. Previewing a theme
  155.  
  156. To preview a theme, you must first Install it. See the description of the
  157. Install page below for more information about this.
  158.  
  159. You can preview the components of a Theme before you Apply it to your desktop.
  160. The "Display", "Sounds" and "Pointers" pages allow you to see or hear the
  161. various components of the current theme. Each page contains a list of
  162. components - for the graphical ones, just click on its name to display it.
  163. To hear a sound, select the appropriate sound by name and click the play button.
  164.

  166. 6. Miscellaneous settings
  167.  
  168. The "Miscellaneous" page contains several additional options that Plus!
  169. provides. Some of these might not work on a standard Windows 95 system, but
  170. feel free to play around with them. The "Stretch desktop wallpaper to fit the
  171. page" feature is emulated by Desktop Themes, but some of the others seem to
  172. require Plus! to work. If you change the 'Show icons using all possible colours'
  173. setting, you will need to reset Windows for the change to take effect.
  174.  
  175. This page also has a field labelled "Path to Themes". You can use this to
  176. modify the path that themes are stored in. If you enter a directory that does
  177. not exist, it will be created automatically.

  180. 7. Installing Themes
  181.  
  182. The "Install" page allows you to install a new theme. Themes are usually
  183. distributed in ZIP format, so you must unzip the theme to a temporary directory.
  184. You MUST use a ZIP program that supports long filenames (like WinZip). Once
  185. you have done this, you must enter the full name of the .theme file in the
  186. Install page. Use the Browse button to help you find it.
  187.  
  188. Theme Installer will also attempt to install any TrueType fonts that have
  189. been included as part of the theme.
  190.  
  191. Quite often, themes have several components defined in the .theme file that
  192. were not supplied in the archive (eg the screen saver). Desktop Themes will
  193. successfully install a theme even if components are missing, and will
  194. display a list of the files that could not be installed at the end of the
  195. process.
  196.  
  197. Themes that have been installed with Desktop Themes can also be uninstalled
  198. automatically. To uninstall a theme, select it in the list and click the
  199. Uninstall button. You can also uninstall themes via the Add & Remove Progrems
  200. control panel. If an error occurs while uninstalling a theme, it is usually
  201. because one or more of the theme components is in use by something, and can
  202. not be deleted.

  204. Some third-party themes are not constructed correctly. The .theme file which
  205. contains the references to the theme components uses a notation that allows
  206. non-specific path names for components. For example, it can specify :
  207.  
  208.     %themedir%MyTheme\MyComputer.ico
  209.  
  210. instead of
  211.  
  212.     c:\Program Files\Plus!\Themes\MyTheme\MyComputer.ico
  213.  
  214. This means that wherever your themes directory is on your system, the theme
  215. will still be able to find its components.
  216.  
  217. Some themes do not use the %themedir% notation - instead, they use absolute
  218. paths to theme components, often paths on the theme author's own system.
  219. You might see something like :
  220.  
  221.     d:\work\mytheme\MyComputer.ico
  222.  
  223. This is plainly not going to work on any computer other than the theme
  224. author's.
  225.  
  226. A future version of Desktop Themes will try to get around this problem. For
  227. the mean time, themes that are not constructed correctly will not work.
  228.  
  229. Note that if you want to create a theme for distribution, you should use
  230. the 'Distribution' option on the 'Edit Theme' page (described below), or
  231. else you might run into this problem as well.

  235. 8. Installing Startup and Shutdown screens
  236.  
  237. Startup and Shutdown screens are not officially part of a Theme, but you often
  238. find them distributed with themes. The "Screens" page allows you to easily
  239. install startup and shutdown screens, and optionally to backup your old screens.
  240. Use the Browse button to locate the three screens in question. They often have
  241. the following names:
  242.  
  243.     Startup            - Logo.sys
  244.     Shutdown Wait        - LogoW.sys
  245.     Shutdown Safe        - LogoS.sys
  246.  
  247. Note that you do not need to provide all three screens; Desktop Themes will
  248. only install the ones you select.
  249.  
  250. You can also select the "Backup old Startup/Shutdown screens" option to have
  251. your old screens preserved. If you do this, you can restore your old screens
  252. later using the Restore button. Note that you can only restore the last
  253. backed-up set of screens, so if you are testing several sets of screens you
  254. should Restore the old set in between installing each new set.
  255.  
  256. Press the Install button once you have selected the screen files, and they will
  257. be copied to the appropriate locations automatically.
  258.  
  259. Note that Windows NT 4.0 does not support the startup/shutdown screen concept
  260. and so this page is unavailable when running on an NT system.

  264. 9. Editing Themes
  265.  
  266. Note that the 'Edit Theme' page contains a reminder that Desktop Themes is a
  267. shareware program. If you register, you will receive an unlock program that
  268. removes this reminder page.
  269.  
  270. The 'Edit Theme' page allows you to create a Theme for distribution to others.
  271. The tree view contains a list of all the Theme components; creating a theme is
  272. simply a matter of going through the items in the tree and supplying the
  273. appropriate settings or files. Note that you do not need to provide a file for
  274. every single item in the list.
  275.  
  276. Once you have set the components of your theme, you should select 'Distribution'
  277. from the list. You can then select an empty directory to create the theme in.
  278. Use the Browse button to locate the directory and give the theme a name, and
  279. then press the Save button. Desktop Themes will then write the Theme file to
  280. this directory, and copy all your components from wherever they are stored on
  281. your system.
  282.  
  283. Using this method is better than the 'Save As' option from the 'Theme' page as
  284. the Theme file will be created with the correct %ThemeDir% and %WinDir% notation.
  285. It also provides a convenient way of gathering all the theme components together.
  286. Once the theme file has been saved, all you need to do is ZIP the directory using
  287. WinZip or a similar program, and it is ready for distribution.
  288.  
  289. Note that this procedure will not copy files from c:\Windows\Media or
  290. c:\Windows\Cursors. It will also not copy the COOL.DLL file. If you have files
  291. in these directories that you want to distribute as part of your theme, you
  292. will have to copy them yourself using Explorer.

  296. 10. Wallpaper Notes
  297.  
  298. Support for JPEG Wallpaper files in Desktop Themes is implemented by
  299. converting the JPEG to a temporary BMP file. If you Apply a theme that uses a
  300. JPEG for wallpaper, the picture is converted to a permanent BMP file in your
  301. Windows directory. This file is overwritten each time you Apply a theme that
  302. uses JPEGs, so you only ever have the one converted picture. Since BMP files
  303. take much more room than JPEGs, you should ensure you have enough space on
  304. your Windows drive (approximately 3mb is required for an average size 24bit
  305. picture). This is the same mechanism as Plus! uses.
  306.  
  307. The JPEG conversion itself requires about 1mb of memory - if a wallpaper
  308. isn't appearing, and it's a JPEG file, then you probably do not have enough
  309. memory. In this case, try closing some open applications and try again.
  310.  
  311. Desktop Themes also emulates the Wallpaper stretching that Plus! performs.
  312. This is very useful as it allows you to use practically any size bitmap to
  313. fill your screen, instead of leaving an ugly border around the outside.
  314. Unfortunately, Desktop Themes' stretching isn't as transparent as Plus!'s is;
  315. it has to convert the original size image to a BMP file in your Windows
  316. directory (much like the JPEG conversion - of course if you are stretching a
  317. JPEG file you only get the one BMP!). This can take a bit of time, and requires
  318. some hard drive space. It generally works very well though.
  319.  
  320. Because stretching is implemented via a converted BMP file, if you change
  321. screen resolution the stretched image will no longer be the correct size.
  322. To remedy this, run Desktop Themes and select the Miscellaneous tab. Turn off
  323. 'Stretch wallpaper to fit the screen' and click the Apply button. Then turn it
  324. back on and click the Apply button again. You will also have to do this if you
  325. change Wallpaper through the Display Properties, and want to stretch it to full
  326. screen.

  330. 11. Other Notes
  331.  
  332. If you have Plus! installed when you run Desktop Themes, it won't install itself
  333. in the registry as the default theme handler. If you decide you want to switch to
  334. using Desktop Themes, just go to the "Miscellaneous" page and click the "Update"
  335. button. This will force it to install itself as the default handler, overrinding
  336. Plus!.

  338. The previous version of Desktop Themes seemed to have a bug in the way the desktop
  339. window was refreshed after the icons had been changed. Some people reported losing
  340. all their icons, others reported their icons going black and white. Until a
  341. permanent solution to this problem has been found, you need to click on the
  342. desktop window and press F5 to refresh the icon display manually.

  345. 12. Sites
  346.  
  347. The new 'Sites' tab in Desktop Themes 1.7 provides a convenient list of web sites
  348. where you can download themes. To go to one of the listed sites, simply click on
  349. the name in the list and then click the Connect button below. Your web browser
  350. will be automatically launched, however you do need to be already connected to
  351. the Internet for this to work.

  354. 13. Command line switches
  355.  
  356. Desktop Themes supports several command line switches. In practice you will
  357. never need to use these, but they are listed here for reference.
  358.  
  359.     /s <filename.theme>        - Apply the given theme
  360.     /conv <source.jpg> <dest.bmp>    - Convert a JPG to a BMP
  361.     /stretch <source> <dest.bmp>    - Stretch a BMP or JPG to full screen

  367.         - This would apply the settings in the supplied theme

  378. 14. Uninstalling
  379.  
  380. To uninstall the Desktop Themes application, simply delete the file. To
  381. uninstall themes themselves, use either the "Install" page of Desktop Themes,
  382. or the Add & Remove Programs control panel.

  463. Installing a Theme - Step by Step guide
  464. ---------------------------------------
  465.  
  466. Firstly, you need to have already "installed" the Desktop Themes program itself.
  467. All this means is that you have placed the "Desktop Themes.exe" program somewhere,
  468. and run it at least once. It will have asked you to select a folder to store
  469. themes in (or, if you already had Plus! installed, it will use the Plus!
  470. folder). After this step, installing themes is easy:
  471.  
  472. 1. Download the theme you want from the Net, pull it off a CD, or whatever.
  473.  
  474. 2. Using Windows Explorer, Move the theme ZIP file to a TEMPORARY folder.
  475.    To create a temporary folder easily, simply right-click on the Windows
  476.    desktop and select New -> Folder.
  477.  
  478. 3. Once you have the ZIP file in the temporary folder, you need to extract
  479.    it using a zip program that supports long filenames. WinZip (http://www.winzip.com)
  480.    is the most popular of these. Extract it into the temporary folder.
  481.  
  482. 4. Go to the temporary folder using Explorer, and right-click on the .theme file.
  483.    The .theme file will usually have the name of the theme itself, the type will be
  484.    "Desktop Theme File", and it will be shown with the Desktop Themes icon.
  485.  
  486. 5. When you right-click on the .theme file, a popup menu will appear. Select the
  487.    'Install Theme' option from the menu, and the Desktop Themes program will be
  488.    launched to automatically install your theme.
  489.  
  490.  
  491. If you like, you can substitute steps 4 and 5 with the following step:
  492.  
  493. 4. Run the Desktop Themes program, and click on the "Install" tab. Then select the
  494.    "Browse" button, and use the dialog to navigate to your temporary folder and
  495.    select the theme that you want to install.
  496.  
  497.  
  498. Once your theme has been installed, Desktop Themes will show you a list of
  499. the files (if any) that could not be installed, for some reason or another.
  500. Usually you can ignore this. Once the theme is installed, you can also delete
  501. the contents of the temporary directory, as they are no longer needed.

  503. You should then be able to click the "Theme" tab in the Desktop Themes program,
  504. and you will find that your newly installed theme has been added to the drop-down
  505. list.
